Students and parents expressing concern about school safety

News Summary

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed following the tragic beating of 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis outside Rancho High School in Las Vegas. The incident resulted in Lewis’s death after severe injuries, sparking outrage and questions about school safety. His mother accuses the school and property owner of negligence, seeking damages for her devastating loss. The assault, recorded on video, led to the arrest of multiple students, igniting discussions within the community about violence and student safety.

Heartbreaking Lawsuit Filed in the Wake of Fatal Beating Outside Rancho High School

The city of Las Vegas is grappling with a tragic incident that has left a 17-year-old boy’s family devastated. Jonathan Lewis, a student at Rancho High School, suffered a brutal beating by a group of teens just as classes were wrapping up in November 2023. This shocking episode unfolded near East Owens Avenue and North Bruce Street, right outside the school, and unfortunately, Lewis passed away six days later in the hospital due to the severe injuries he sustained during the attack.

A Disturbing Incident Captured on Video

What’s even more troubling is that the assault was recorded on video, showing a shocking display of violence as the group of teenagers kicked, punched, and stomped on Lewis until he lost consciousness. The incident, which caught the attention of the community, culminated in the arrest of nine students connected to the attack. Initially, four of these teens were charged as adults with second-degree murder; however, they later struck a plea deal that resulted in their cases being transferred to juvenile court. In September 2023, these four individuals received sentences at a correctional facility.

A Mother’s Fight for Justice

In the aftermath of this heartbreaking loss, Mellisa Ready, Lewis’ mother, has taken a significant step by filing a wrongful death lawsuit in District Court. The legal action names the Clark County School District (CCSD) and Sandra Corona, the property owner where the senseless violence took place, as the defendants.

Allegations of Negligence

Ready’s lawsuit accuses the CCSD of wrongful death and negligence, suggesting that the school failed to properly supervise its students and prevent violence from occurring. The lawsuit points out that the location of the attack is a “known gathering spot” for students, and it has a history of prior criminal activities. This raises serious questions about the safety measures in place to protect students in the area.

Furthermore, the lawsuit alleges that both CCSD and Corona should have recognized the ongoing risk of violence at this particular location. It claims that school officials were aware of previous aggressive behavior exhibited by some of the teens involved in Lewis’ tragic beating. The complaint strongly argues that the school had an obligation to act in order to prevent what it describes as foreseeable harm, especially since the violence took place on property adjacent to the school premises.

Seeking Damages

As part of this legal battle, Ready is seeking damages exceeding $15,000, in addition to additional sums for wrongful death and emotional distress. The mother is undoubtedly navigating a painful journey as she strives to secure justice for her son while coping with her devastating loss.

Silence from School District and Property Owner

When contacted regarding the ongoing litigation, CCSD opted not to comment. Attempts to reach Sandra Corona for a statement have also been unsuccessful, leaving many questions unanswered in the community.

The tragic story of Jonathan Lewis has resonated throughout Las Vegas, igniting discussions about school safety and the responsibilities of educational institutions in protecting their students. As this lawsuit unfolds, the community and those affected by this heartbreaking incident continue to seek answers and a sense of closure.
